A unique custom made tallit is a beautiful way to commemorate a meaningful Jewish occasion, such as a Bar or Bat Mitzvah (including adult Bnei Mitzvot!), a conversion to Judaism, a wedding, anniversary, or any other milestone.  Whether you commission a tallit as a gift for a loved one or for yourself, it is sure to become a cherished heirloom for generations.

The Story

When I launched my Wearable Art Tallit Collection, I never dreamed  it would get such a warm reception. A tallit (also called a tallis) is a Jewish prayer shawl, traditionally worn for worship and meaningful Jewish lifecycle events such as Bar and Bat Mitzvot, weddings, baby namings, and more. I am incredibly grateful that my artistic tallits (tallitot in Hebrew) have been a meaningful part of so many Mitzvahs, conversion ceremonies, rabbinical installations, weddings, and more. It is truly an honor!

As time went on and word of my new offering began to spread, I began hearing from people interested in custom hand-made tallit designs. The first such project I took on was a custom hand-painted tallit for Emily, who wanted an heirloom to commemorate her coming of age and entrance into the Jewish world. Her completely unique tallit design was based on a plate she bought as a souvenir when traveling around Spain.

Since then, I have had a grandmother order a custom tallit with her Bar Mitzvah granddaughter’s favorite hobbies, a mom order a Harry Potter tallit for her Bar Mitzvah boy, and even clergy order full matching tallitot sets for their congregations.

The Process

Allow me to walk you through the process of designing your one-of-a-kind tallit.

For the first step, we chat about your ideas. Whether you want a tallit with your favorite Star Wars characters or a tallit that tells the story of how you found your way to Judaism, I am eager to hear all about it. Some people coming to me knowing exactly what they want and others just have a vague idea about colors and styles. Either is totally fine – we will work together to iron out your thoughts and translate them onto the fabric.

Once I get an idea of what you have in mind, I will create some tallit design sketches for you. These can be either digital or pencil drawings, depending on what works better for your design. After we nail down a design you are excited about, I will get to work!

 Timeline

A custom tallit takes quite a bit of time, so they need to be ordered a minimum of 12 weeks from when you would like to have your tallit. How long the whole process takes will depend on how quickly you make decisions about the design and answer emails. There is a whole team involved on my end, including a sewing house, fabric printers, and of course yours truly, so we need at least a full 8 weeks between the time that you approve the sketch and when we ship out the tallit.

Pricing

Unlike my already existing tallit collection, the designs in which start at only $250, a custom tallit is a completely different process, because I will be creating a brand new tallit design for you from scratch! Custom painted tallits start at $700 and go up depending on the complexity of the design. If that is outside your budget, browse my Wearable Art Tallit collection to see the vibrant designs I have in stock.
