This clause, which the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Rabbinical Assembly accepted in 1953, is added in as a paragraph at the end of the ketubah text. The purpose of this clause is to solve the challenge of the “agunah”. An agunah is a Jewish woman whose husband refuses to grand her a religious divorce and she is therefore prohibited from re-marrying under Jewish law. The literal meaning of agunah is “chained woman”. By signing the Lieberman Clause, the bride and groom agree to recognize the authority of the court of the more modern court of the Conservative Rabbinical Assembly and the Jewish Theological Seminary to allow a divorce at the request of either the husband or the wife. Thereby, the addition of this clause makes for a more egalitarian version of the ancient Orthodox ketubah text.

What does the Lieberman Clause actually say?

Here is a translation of the Lieberman Clause of the Ketubah. This text, which has been used in Judaism for thousands of years (earliest versions of documents with this text are from about 440 BCE), outlines the groom’s responsibilities towards the bride. It is a legal, binding contract according to Jewish law. While the Orthodox text is only signed by two male witnesses, most Conservative rabbis allow for signature lines for the bride and groom as well. Many officiating Conservative rabbis also like to sign the ketubah themselves.

Another difference between the Orthodox and Conservative ketubah is how it is filled in. Traditionally Hebrew names are written in the ben/bat form. This means that the Hebrew name of the bride and groom are listed along with their parents’ Hebrew names, as in “Rachel daughter of….”. On Orthodox ketubahs only the father’s parentage is listed, but on Conservative ketubahs the mother’s name is usually also added in, once again making this document a more egalitarian version of the traditional Orthodox text. This does vary rabbi to rabbi, which is why we always make a digital proof for your rabbi to check and approve before finalizing your ketubah.

Pairing the Conservative Text with English

Jerusalem Love Tree Ketubah

Because the Conservative Ketubah Text is a pretty dry legal document, most people choose not to have a literal translation of it on their beautiful art ketubah. A ketubah is a beautiful tradition for all religions. What makes an interfaith ketubah text unique is that rather than focusing on a higher power, it is instead centered on the vows the bride and groom make to each other and the values of the home they are building they will build together. An interreligious ketubah honors the traditions and religions of both the bride and the groom by celebrating the differences in their backgrounds, which will enrich their story and strengthen their family. The couple promises to be faithful partners, to honor each other, to share their hopes and dreams. This is a fun part. Every ketubah comes in a choice of sizes. When thinking about the size of your ketubah, you want to consider both how large you want it to be when it is displayed under your chuppah during your wedding ceremony, and where you want to hang it in your home. Remember, a ketubah stays with you long after the wedding day, which is why it’s so important to pick ketubah art that you love and that fits your vibe. Some people make their ketubah a center point in their home, while others prefer to keep it somewhere more intimate.

Ketubah Text Fill—In

The next customization to choose depends on whether or not you would like your text filled in. The document outlines the groom’s responsibilities towards the bride, including a financial commitment (although this is in Zuzim, so by today’s standards it is only symbolic). In order to dissolve the ketubah, the couple would need to go before a rabbinical court and the husband would need to provide the wife with a “gett”. Unlike the Orthodox and Conservative ketubah texts, the Reform movement does not have one strict ketubah text that the movement requires. Instead, the Reform movement’s requirements may vary from rabbi to rabbi. Most Reform rabbis are open to including values which are most important to each individual bride and groom as part of their ketubah contract. Many Reform rabbis also require that the ketubah mention the couple’s plans to build a Jewish home, be a part of the Jewish community, and/or their commitment to Tikkun Olam (the Jewish value of repairing the world, which is often interpreted in modern times as a commitment to social justice).

The Reform ketubah is an egalitarian contract. Unlike the Orthodox and Conservative ketubahs which outline the groom’s responsivities towards the bride, the Reform ketubah focuses instead on the values and commitments that the couple plans to adhere to. This can include things like respect, compromise, and listening to one another, or even more practical items such as traveling regularly, raising children, or whose job it will be to load the dishwasher (just kidding, that one might be a little too real).

Here are some fun ideas to include in your Reform ketubah text:

A Little Background

Hamsa Love Tree Ketubah

The Jewish Reform movement (not Reformed, that’s a common misnomer), started in Germany in the late 1700 / early 1800s. At that time, a process began to lift legal restrictions on European Jews and give them something closer to equal rights with other Europeans. This meant Jews could live outside of small secluded Jewish communities (the Jewish ghetto) and integrate more into the culture. This had an impact on the practice of Judaism, and some Jews began to loosen observance, including dietary restrictions (keeping kosher) to try to assimilate into society. The early leaders of the Reform movement aimed to structure a Jewish practice that was more in line with European life. The first Reform synagogue was founded in Hamburg, Germany, in 1818.

Today, the Reform movement is the largest denomination of Judaism in the United States. It has consistently been a leader in bringing progressive values to the larger Jewish community. The Reform movement was the first movement to ordain a female rabbi. The Reform movement began admitting openly gay and lesbian rabbinical students in the 1980s and admitted its first transgender student in 2003. The movement also began accepting patrilinear descent (meaning considering a child Jewish even if the father is Jewish but the mother is not) in the early 80s, provided that the child was raised Jewish. This is contrary to traditional Jewish law which recognizes Jewish lineage through the mother’s side only. The movement also welcomes interfaith couples. Most Reform rabbis officiate at interfaith weddings.

When you choose a Reform ketubah text for your wedding contract, you are linking your special day to this rich history of progressivism, evolution, and social action.

A Focus On Social Justice

The Reform movement has always accepted modernity and incorporates innovation into all aspects of Jewish tradition. If you add gold leaf to your watercolor ketubah, whether you are ordering a print or an original, I will hand paint the gold leaf onto your design. Adding yellow or white gold to your ketubah watercolors really elevates the art and makes it more luxurious.

Watercolor ketubah paper is great for signing

There is another reason that watercolor ketubahs are the way to go. You will want to sign your ketubah! Traditionally a ketubah is signed by a minimum of two witnesses, and modern day ketubahs are also signed by the bride, groom and rabbi or officiant. Signing canvas can only work with a permanent marker or Sharpie, but a watercolor ketubah is easy to sign with a pen. Your ketubah will arrive having been bathed in joy and positive energy, ready to celebrate.
Archival Giclee print with ultra-chrome inks
Thick, textured, acid-free watercolor paper
Comes in a clear plastic sleeve for safekeeping
Signature lines are customizable
Giclee prints are museum-quality. This means that the rich, vibrant color won’t fade for over 100 years if kept out of direct sunlight, so you can enjoy your ketubah as much on your 60th wedding anniversary as you do on your wedding day.
We offer Reform, Egalitarian, Humanist, Secular, Orthodox Aramaic, Conservative with Lieberman Clause, Gordon Tucker Text and Interfaith and Same Sex texts.
You should choose a text that you and your fiancé feel a connection to. Often times rabbis will also have requirements for your ketubah text, so please make sure to consult with your officiant. If you are not sure which type of text is best for you, speak to your Rabbi or officiant.
What is Text Personalization?
Regardless of which text you choose, the ketubah text will need to be filled-in with your personal information. This is things like your names, Hebrew names, your parents' names if you choose to include them, wedding date, Hebrew date, location, and more. You have the option of ordering the text standard, with blank areas throughout where your rabbi would fill in your information by hand, or you can choose to have me do it for you so that all the font matches. If you plan on having your rabbi fill the text in for you, then please make sure you check with him or her and make sure that they are on board and comfortable doing that. Many rabbis do require that the ketubah be pre-filled, and that's something you don't want to find out on your wedding day.
If you choose to have me fill the ketubah in for you, then I will create a digital proof for you and your rabbi or officiant to check and approve before we finalize the ketubah. If you would like me to fill the ketubah text in for you, then under "Personalize", select "we fill in details for you".
Please note that regardless of which option you choose, your ketubah will still have signature lines on the bottom for you, your witnesses and officiant to sign by hand.
Do you recommend that we fill in the ketubah ourselves or that we have you do it?
I highly recommend having usfill in your text(rather than leaving it blank) because it eliminates any chances of last minute stress, errors, or just plain old bad handwriting on your beautiful ketubah!
If you order your ketubah with personalized text, then I will email you a form with all the information we will need to fill in your text. I will then create adigital prooffor you and your rabbi or officiant to check and approve before completing the ketubah.
What if I want my ketubah to be only in Hebrew or only in English?
All of my ketubahs are available withEnglish, Hebrew, or both. If you are ordering a round text design in the smallest size, then I recommend going with only one language.
If you are ordering the small size with both languages, then I highly recommend having us fill the ketubah in for you -- it is hard to do with small lines.
Can you translate my custom text into Hebrew? Does it cost extra?
Translationis included ifweare filling in your text. For custom text there will be an additional charge.
We are an interfaith couple. Do you have any texts that will work for us?
Absolutely! I offer a special interfaith text. The Egalitarian, Humanist and Reform texts are also popular with interfaith couples.
Can we mix and match texts? Like have an Orthodox text in Hebrew and an Egalitarian in English?
Sure! I believe that your ketubah should be as unique as you are, so I am happy to customize it in any way you like.
Just shoot me an email and let me know which texts you would like in which language. There is no extra charge for mixing and matching texts from my site.
What if we are not being married by a Rabbi?
No problem! I can make the signature line on the bottom say Officiant, Cantor, or anything else you prefer, just send me an email as soon as you place your order and let me know. If you don't have a rabbi officiating, then I highly recommend having us fill the text in for you -- otherwise, please make sure whoever is going to fill it in for you is comfortable reading and writing Hebrew (and who has good handwriting too!).
Do I get to check over my ketubah before you print it?
If we are filling your ketubah in for you, then absolutely! I always send a proof for you and your Rabbi to check over before we print.
If you are ordering a blank ketubah and would like a digital proof, please shoot me an email as soon as you place your order to let me know that you would like a proof before it goes out.
Other Ketubah Questions
What is the gold leaf option?
Gold leaf is real gold ground down into very thin sheets and then liquified. If you choose this option, I will hand-paint a layer of either white or yellow gold (your choice) details over your ketubah.
Do you take orders for original commissioned ketubahs?
I sure do! Creating original art is my favorite.
Custom art needs to be ordered at least 2 months from when you want to have your ketubah (in most cases, if you're in a big rush it doesn't hurt to reach out -- sometimes you can get in luck and catch me in-between commissions).
It also is significantly more expensive than choosing an already-existing design. If a completely custom commission is above your budget, you can always get a quote for modifying an already-existing design rather than starting from scratch entirely.
If you order your ketubah with personalized text, then I will send you a digital proof within 5 business days of receiving your filled out customization form. Ketubahs are shipped within a week of final proof approval.
What if I have a rush order?
Rush orders are usually not a problem, but if your wedding is in less than three weeks, please check with me before placing the order to make sure I can get it to you on time.
What if my Rabbi has a specific text he wants us to use?
No problem! I can use any text you like (as long as it is not copyrighted or you have permission from the owner). Just chose “custom text” at checkout and email me the text.
What kind of prints are your ketubahs?
My ketubahs are Giclee prints, also known as Archival or Museum-Quality prints. They are museum-quality prints on acid-free textured cold press watercolor paper using ultrachrome inks. I use only the highest quality printing to insure that your ketubah will stay with you and stay as vibrant as the day you got it.
How are the ketubahs shipped and how long does delivery take?
I usually ship with USPS Priority Mail and delivery usually takes 2-3 business days in the continental US.
I live outside the continental US can you ship to me and how much does it cost?
Of course! And if your ketubah costs over $400, it's free!
